How Not Knowing OGS Display Makes You a Rookie

OGS DISPLAY:
OGS means One Glass Solution, and OGS display is technology where mobile screen glasses are integrated into a single unit. Normally screen structure is LCD screen below the capacitive touch module and top of all unit, there is a protective cover glass. It is simple to understand, the LCD is screen provides display output with backlit, then the capacitive touch module or sensor for input purpose and finally the cover glass for the display protection.
OGS display is no far distinct from that, it's just improved version of normal LCD touchscreen display. In OGS display touch module and the protective screen is integrated into a single unit in order to improve the desirable properties like optical clarity, readability, and especially thinness, because when touch module and protective glass are integrated into one single unit, the thickness of display unit reduces considerably. To make the display unit as OGS display, basic idea is to replace the traditional touch module by a thin layer of insulating material and to reduce thickness by the purpose of that layer.
It is done with two methods. The first one is to deposit an ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) layer on the back of the cover glass, that is used as electrodes to sense touch and patterned it to create the electrodes. The next step is to add the thin insulator layer to the bottom of that ITO layer, and then again to deposit a second ITO layer on the back of that insulating layer, patterning it to create electrodes running at right angles to the first ITO layer. This module then made laminated onto a standard LCD panel. And this display is called as 'sensor on the lens' display. (Here lens is referred to the glass.)
The another method is called as the 'on-cell' capacitive touch screen. In this method, the conductive layer of ITO is deposited directly onto the top layer of glass in the LCD panel and then patterned into electrodes. A thin insulating layer is applied over this ITO layer, and then the second ITO layer is patterned into the second layer of electrodes. Finally, the top polarizing layer is applied on top, and the display is completed by adding the  protective cover glass.
After studying that, it appears that the 'sensor on the lens' method of OGS display has an advantage over 'on-cell' display solutions. The on-cell approach means that LCD screen manufacturers would have to make two separate models of each panel, one with touch and one without. This could lead the additional cost to the display manufacturing industry. Another one disadvantage of the on-cell display is, the touch is limited to the size of the LCD panel and you can't pattern it more than that. The 'sensor on glass' modules can be larger than the LCD panel, providing extra room for the touch points.
The OGS display has several advantages and disadvantages too. Due to the reduced thickness, mobile devices has become sleek and stylish as well as lightweight. Due to the absence of the air gap in these displays, (which is generally present in normal touch screen display and Lowers optical clarity due to refraction) the optical clarity, screen readability, visuals and touch response also improves dramatically. One Glass Solution also lowers the cost of panel manufacturing, and by extension, the cost of overall equipment production. It has already been successfully integrated into several high-end mobile phones and tablets.

But the major disadvantage is, if you dropped the device and display got damaged, then you have to change whole display unit and not just cover glass. And this becomes very expensive as compared to normal touch screen displays. And in the case of the 'sensor on the lens' display, due to the process of  how it is manufactured, 'sensor on the lens' display is very fragile in comparison to 'on-cell' touch display. The damage to the cover glass will  directly affect the functionality of the touch screen. But don't worry there are several glass manufacturers like Corning and AGC are developing hard, damage resistant display cover glass solution for the OGS displays. So that you can choose any type of display according to your preference or simply buy insurance for your mobile device.
